Domestic & Commercial Air Conditioning FAQs

How does an air conditioner work?

Modern air conditioners work by transferring heat, not just generating cold or warm air. In cooling mode, the system extracts heat from indoor air and expels it outside using a refrigeration cycle involving a compressor, condenser, evaporator, and refrigerant gas. The refrigerant absorbs indoor heat at the evaporator coil, then releases it outside via the condenser.

In heating mode (via reverse-cycle or heat pump technology), the process is reversed: the system pulls heat from the outside air—even in cold weather—and transfers it indoors. This makes reverse-cycle systems highly efficient and cost-effective alternatives to traditional heating.

We offer a wide range of systems tailored to domestic and commercial needs, including:

  • Wall-mounted split systems – Ideal for single rooms or small spaces

  • Multi-split systems – One outdoor unit linked to several indoor units

  • Ducted systems – Fully integrated, discreet heating and cooling for entire buildings

What are the benefits of regular maintenance for air conditioners?

Routine servicing is essential to maintain performance, air quality, and energy efficiency. It prevents dust build-up, bacterial growth, gas leaks, and mechanical faults. Well-maintained systems run quieter, last longer, and use less energy—saving you money and hassle over time.

Some warning signs include:

  • Reduced airflow or poor temperature control

  • Unusual noises (buzzing, rattling, or clicking)

  • Leaks or pooling water

  • Strange smells when running

  • Higher-than-usual energy bills

Addressing these early can prevent breakdowns and costly repairs. Contact us if you are worried.

For residential systems, we recommend a full service annually. For commercial premises, especially those running AC continuously, twice yearly inspections are ideal—pre-summer and pre-winter.

Industrial Refrigeration Systems FAQs

How does refrigeration work?

Refrigeration systems remove heat from an enclosed space using a closed-loop cycle. Here’s how:

  • A refrigerant circulates through the system and evaporates at low pressure, absorbing heat from inside the fridge.

  • This gas is then compressed, raising its temperature and pressure.

  • It flows to the condenser coil, usually located at the rear or outside, where it releases the heat to the surrounding air and condenses back into a liquid.

  • The liquid then passes through an expansion valve, reducing its pressure and cooling it further before re-entering the evaporator.
This cycle keeps the internal temperature low, preserving food, medicine, or sensitive equipment.

We supply and install:

  • Undercounter and display fridges for retail and hospitality

  • Cold rooms and walk-in freezers for bulk storage

  • Bottle coolers and back bar fridges

  • Chest freezers, blast chillers, and specialist units for catering, pharmaceutical, or industrial use
Each is designed to meet strict hygiene, temperature, and safety regulations.

And so much more!

How often should refrigeration systems be serviced?

For light use, a yearly service may be sufficient. For commercial or high-volume operations, a 6-month schedule is advised. Regular maintenance prevents:

  • Compressor failure

  • Ice build-up

  • Temperature fluctuations

  • Excess energy use

  • Costly stock loss from unnoticed faults

Key factors to consider include:

  • Volume of goods stored

  • Required temperature range

  • Energy efficiency and environmental impact

  • Site access and available space

  • Industry-specific compliance (e.g. FSA, HACCP, MHRA)
We offer free consultations to help assess your needs and recommend the most efficient and scalable solution.

  • Sudden temperature changes or alarms

  • Unusual noises (clicking, grinding, hissing)

  • Excess condensation or puddles

  • Frost or ice forming in unusual places

  • Compressor running constantly or short-cycling

  • Higher electricity bills without increased use

Addressing issues early can prevent full system breakdowns and protect your stock.
